IDC calls it a “permanent reallocation” rather than a cycle, and the duration estimates cluster on relief no earlier than late 2027, when Micron’s Idaho fabs begin producing — with the peak believed to be roughly now, mid-2026. What it means for local-first builders — my corner of this

This column exists because the squeeze lands directly on the economics this publication advocates. Three practical reads:

The self-hosting floor keeps rising. Monday’s dispatch priced the GPU floor at $2–20k/month and noted H100 rentals up ~14% year-over-year — the memory squeeze is a large part of why, since HBM now constitutes half or more of a packaged GPU’s cost. Every month this persists, the “self-hosting is cheap” assumption erodes further, and the router/hybrid arithmetic gets more compelling, not less: high utilization is the only thing that justifies hardware at these prices.

Unified-memory Macs got strategically interesting — and won’t get cheaper. My own DojoClaw fleet runs large models on Apple silicon’s unified memory precisely because it sidesteps the discrete-GPU/HBM tax. But Apple buys the same DRAM everyone else does; IDC expects flagship devices to hold RAM configurations flat rather than raise them, and pricing pressure to flow through across the board. If a high-memory Mac is in your infrastructure plan, the affordability-ceiling dynamic suggests configurations get repriced or memory-tiered, not discounted. The window to build a fleet at current prices is the same kind of window this week’s main dispatch described: known width now, unknown later.

Buy minimum, buy contracted, buy now-ish. The practical guidance across sources converges: if hardware is needed within two quarters, waiting is a losing trade; buy the minimum capacity that genuinely serves the workload; and treat memory as a contracted line item, not a spot purchase. For homelab-scale builders the same logic scales down — the 128GB kit you’re deferring “until prices normalize” is waiting on fabs that pour concrete in 2027.

One demand-side wildcard, honestly flagged: IEEE Spectrum notes the least-discussed relief scenario — architectures that simply need less memory. Given that this week documented open-weight labs competing hard on efficiency (Kimi cutting thinking tokens 30%, sparse MoEs activating 3% of parameters), the demand curve is not a law of physics either. Watch it.
